Over £350,000 Allocated For Hereford Junction Upgrade

Herefordshire Council has allocated nearly £400,000 to upgrade the traffic signal system at one of Hereford’s busiest city centre junctions.

A budget of £355,449.95 has been set aside for the works at Commercial Road and Blueschool Street, alongside a contingency fund of £35,500.

Work is scheduled to begin on 12 October to replace the existing traffic lights with modern equipment designed to improve reliability and reduce traffic faults. The scheme includes new vehicle detection technology, upgraded pedestrian crossings, and general infrastructure repairs.

The local authority confirmed the junction will remain open to traffic for the majority of the project, which is scheduled to finish by 4 December 2026. Temporary three-way traffic signals will control vehicles while permanent equipment is installed.

However, specific daytime road closures will be required on Union Street on 20 and 21 October, between 7am and 5pm, to allow key work to take place safely. Signed diversion routes will be in place.

The project forms part of an ongoing investment to modernise city centre traffic signals, with further upgrades planned for Station Approach and Stonebow Road. Council officials are advising motorists to allow extra travel time during busy periods.
